This Alien Earth -- Timeline

YC = Year of Contact. Some time in the Very Near Future. As of this writing, 2010 actually looks good as the year we make contact, but this may slip as time marches on while I continue to work on the series.

  • YC-2 US Presidential election year. Spiro Patterson, an evangelist TV preacher representing a growing number of Christians disaffected with the Republican party, runs as the Democratic candidate and wins.
  • YC-1 Reflecting Patterson's isolationist tendencies, US troops are brought home from various deployments overseas.
  • YC Year of Contact. Story: Something Wonderful This Way Comes. GURPS game: Cool Regime Change.
    • "California Conservatives" take control of US Republican Party and Congress. First Planetary Bank of Earth established, issues Earth Nominal Economic Exchange Units (ENEEU, pronounced EE-new).
  • YC+1 Story: The World of Null-I.
    • January: US economy in deep recession. Stock market crashes, US Dollar devalued. International commodities like oil are priced in ENEEU instead of dollars. Threan State begins buying out failing US companies. Recession spreads to US trade partners.
    • One million humans are selected to take a free space cruise to Alpha Centauri, in an effort to help the human race develop a wider perspective.
  • YC+2 Story: The Case Against the Human Race.
    • United Busybodies' Committee on Minding Other Aliens' Business for Them conducts an inquiry. The Threans are letting humans learn by making their own mistakes. The Committee argues the practice is inhumane.
    • Grimman-owned Tuf's Thoroughly Unhealthy Food is object of a class action suit in the US. The suit claims that Tuf's deliberately sells humans food which is bad for them. Tuf's says no duh, that's why they advertise the fact.
    • Religious fanatics assassinate a Grimman "blasphemedian" on the stage of a popular talk show also killing the human host.
    • A secretive atheist group known as Rationis Capax blames religion for making humans "too irrational" to join the aliens' Community. The group calls for humanity to throw off the shackles of superstition, with a hint of a threat of violence if they don't.
    • US Presidential election: Republicans try to blame the President for the economy and the religious violence. Then they are found to have accepted a large amount of campaign funding from the Threan State. Public opinion turns against the Republicans and the President is re-elected
