• Three years before First Contact: Global economy begins to recover, but runs into an oil shortage. Oil production can't keep up with demand. Oil prices skyrocket, leading to global inflation.
• Two years before First Contact: Global war for control of the Earth's remaining oil reserves.
• One year before First Contact: Global war ends with occupied oil-producing nations nuking their own oil reserves to keep the invaders from having the oil. Global oil and energy shortage.
